In Search of Whitewater - Paddling the Dumoine River

(Excerpts from KANAWA Magazine, summer 2010)

The low water levels this summer enticed more visitors to the Dumoine River system. The following photos were taken by Ted Baird, who paddled with his brother Jim, friends Will and Matt and dog Merlin from Lac Dix Miles (Ten Mile Lake) down the Dumoine to Rapides-desJoachims (Swisha) on the Ottawa River.

Dumoine River Trip Planner

Trip Length and Difficulty: We spent nine days on the river, which was ample time to finish our trip from where we started at Lac Dix Milles to where we ended at a dam on the Ottawa River just south of Rapides-des-Joachims (Swisha). Most groups choose to have their vehicles shuttled to Driftwood Provincial Park, which is directly across the Ottawa River from the mouth of the Dumoine. There is road access to several places along the river with Lac Dumoine being the most popular starting point for a seven or eight day trip. The rapids on the river are mostly Class I and II with the odd Class III. The Dumoine is an intermediate level whitewater river and experience navigating rapids is an important prerequisite. Portaging is not overly strenuous as most of the rapids can be run and many of the portages are on the short side, although the portage around la Grande Chute is long (1270 m), and if you choose to portage the Triple Play rapids in their entirety you will be looking at a 1500 m carry.

Access: Service to the Dumoine is provided by Dumoine River Expeditions run by Noel Leclerc. The drive in to Lac Dix Milles or Lac Dumoine is about three hours long on bumpy forest access roads. The total cost of the trip, including gas from Toronto and back, food and vehicle shuttle, split four ways was $360 per person. What a great value!
