Deep River Waterfront Improvement Project

Waterfront Improvement Project was initiated by the Deep River Horticultural Society in 2007 and the scope received support from Deep River Town Council in January 2008.

The committee is looking for support and donations from Friends and Businesses.  If you would like to make a donation contact the Town of Deep River or Brian McInall @ valleywines@bellnet.ca, 613-584-2118 or at Valley Wines.
Tax receipts will be provided by the Town of Deep River.

Excerpt from January NRT Article by Terry Myers

"Doug Champ, past president of the Horticultural Society and a member of the committee, said the overall goals of the project are to enhance the "visual appeal" and sustainability of the waterfront between the marina and Beach Ave, and to improve the overall "waterfront experience."

Some of the major parts of the project would be:

  • stabilization work on the actual shoreline to prevent further erosion
  • raising and improving the trail along the waterfront to make it wheelchair accessible
  • building a bridge over one of the outlet creeks
  • constructing a limestone block terrace in front of Centennial Rock but below the level of the road
  • installing canoe storage racks at the motor boat launch area
  • pruning and replanting the forest area with more native trees and flowers
  • and possibly widening Brockhouse Way to make it easier for people to walk on the roadside. "

Local Authors' New Book
The Occupied Garden:

Recovering the Story of a Family in the War-Torn Netherlands

www.theoccupiedgarden.com

The Occupied Garden, released March 2008 by McClelland and Stewart, was written by sisters Kristen den Hartog and Tracy Kasaboski. Chronicling the lives of their father’s family in The Netherlands during the Second World War, and continuing beyond that time to tell of the immigrant experience in Ontario of the 1950s, the book has received excellent reviews. Kristen is an acclaimed novelist, and lives in Toronto. Tracy resides in Deep River, and looks forward to continuing with a writing career. The book is available in stores now, and has a complementary website www.theoccupiedgarden.com where the sisters invite readers to contribute their own family stories and memories from the First and Second World War. Please visit their website to find out more.
