It might interest your
readers to learn that of the top 100 best books of
the past 12 months, according to Globe and Mail
reviewers, two are by authors with Deep River
connections (see below). I think everyone knows
Kristen den Hartog and Tracy Kasaboski but not
everyone might remember that Charles Wilkins'
father, also named Charles Wilkins, was a much
beloved English teacher at MacKenzie high school
(then called Deep River High School) in the 1950's.
I remember Charles Wilkins Junior, or Charlie as we
called him, as a good friend of my youngest brother,
Dougie Cornwell. The Wilkins lived on Parkdale and
we lived on Spring in what we used to call Skunk
Hollow. Charles Wilkins Senior wrote many wonderful
songs about Deep River. I can still sing some of
them now - 50 years later. Here is a sample.
"Blue hills and
purple, soft shadow of mystery grey,
Red-golden sunset, to end a perfect day,
Towering above us, Mount Martin keeps watch as we
roam,
Proudly we love her, Deep River, our home."
By Charles Wilkins Senior

Wrong! This summer
will see new things happening at the waterfront. The steep
hill in front of the Centennial Rock which in recent years
has become the playground for our resident geese population
will be getting a face lift.

Update
from Petawawa Research Forest
- The
Maplefest is scheduled in April and organized by
the Chalk River and Area Lions Club
-
Two cross-country trails at the PRF are open: the
HSA and the Hawk Loop. The trails were cleared by
volunteers from the Friends of the PRF and the Deep
River X-Country Ski Club, along with forestry students
from Algonquin College.
- The
Friends have purchased three benches to be placed
along trails at the PRF.
- The
Friends have created and placed interpretive signs on
the Chalk River Water Trail at the Visitor Centre.
- A 12-foot
banner celebrating the 90th anniversary of the PRF
was placed at the Visitor Centre.
- A glacial
erratic from the PRF was engraved to commemorate the
establishment of the Petawawa Research Forest in 1918.
It was placed at the Visitor Centre at a ceremony in
October.
- A
donation was made to the school sugarbush program to
assist in their purchase of supplies. Over 800 local
students toured the sugarbush this year, learning about
nature, maple syrup and the PRF.
- Our
founder, Kris Morgenstern, passed away on
December 31, 2008. He is missed by all members of the
Friends. He led the efforts to have the Friends of PRF
incorporated and established as a charitable
organization, and he spent many hours volunteering on
behalf of the Friends.
