  The Death Train by Lindsay Walker Grade 5

Honourable Mention Christmas Story Contest

There were many deaths on the midnight train. In fact, so many people got killed, they called it the death train. That was the last train that you wanted to take. If you were lucky, the driver was only drunk. Most of the time, the under age drunk had no idea what he was doing and only got the job because no one else would drive the train. One year, 10% of New York's population got killed on the death train. One day Dr. Matthieu, the best doctor in N.Y., got called to go to the eastern side of N.Y. The only train that went to the eastern side of New York was the midnight train. The Dr. had heard the rumours of the train and by the time the clock struck midnight he was very frightened. As Dr. Matthieu got on the train, he saw a group of cheerleaders. He saw the names on the back of their outfits they were: Amber Brannan, Nicole Ellis, Lesley Stewart, Sofia Turner, Andrea Hansen, Alex Cornett and Melissa Walden. Sitting on the other side of the train were some Yankee fans. He started talking with them and found out that their names were: Andy Murphy, Chris McVey, Aaron Kyle and James Douglas. At the back of the train, the bad crowd sat. Dr. Matthieu knew them from the emergency room. One night, the crowd had come to the emergency room all bruised and cut from a street fight when Dr. Matthieu was on duty. Their names were James Morgan, Richy McCleland, John McGillis, Jeff Allsop and Jonathan Cheung. The Dr. sat down just as the lights started flickering. A cheerleader got jolted forward and hit her head on a window. They saw flashing lights of a police car out the window. The lights went out and the train started speeding up. The scenery was a blur and the train rattled violently. By then 10 other people were knocked out including two of the most important people Lindsay Walker, the second in command, and Dr. Matthieu, the only doctor on the train. Panic arose and people fainted. One passenger went up to the engine only to find Jeff Sage, the driver, slumped over the controls. The police were up beside the train now. Fortunately Nicole Ellis had experience with trains. She came up to the engine and tried the brakes but they were stuck. There were 2 police cars now and they had swerved onto the track ahead. Within a few seconds the train would crash into the police cars. Nicole and the other passenger at the front dragged Jeff to the back of the train. The countdown started. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. "CRRUUNCH". The lights went out and the train rolled off the tracks instantly killing the police. The train kept rolling. Screams were deafening and blood spurted everywhere. Finally the train stopped rolling and sirens were coming closer. The passengers that could got out of the train. Many people got killed but more were injured. Other police men arrived only to discover that the young drunk train driver had mysteriously disappeared. Jeff had lost an arm and an eye for they were found in the train wreck. The next day a funeral service was held for the victims in the crash. The names on the bulletin read: Naomi Arsenault, Sam Ellis, Mike Jarbo, Lauren Kinghorn, Emma Minigan, Shannon Welna and Melanie Clarke. A separate funeral was held for the police who died. All of the other passengers would live with terrible memories. As for the train driver, no one ever saw him again.
