Story by Alex Cornett Grade 5

Honourable Mention 1997 Christmas Story Contest

Once there was a little boy who wanted an adventure more than anything else in the world. One day he was helping his father clean out the attic. "Nothing interesting." thought the boy. Half way through the cleanup the little boy, who's name was Jim, found an old book with a key in the lock. Jim asked if he could stop now and look at the book. "Sure," said his dad "It's a book of mystery stories". Jim went outside and climbed a tree and started to read. After a few minutes he found himself as a detective helping the great Sherlock Holmes and trying to figure out the mystery in the detective's weird ways. This story was not like the other mysteries he had read. As he read, the book seemed to sway in his hands and then it dropped into a boiling brook and he watched as it was swept down stream. Jim found himself in Sherlock Holmes cloak and hat as he searched for the book. He asked a few people about the book and then saw it floating in a pond. Just as he was about to grab it someone called "Jim, time for supper". Jim woke up. He was still in the tree in his backyard. It had all been a dream! The book was on the grass below. It had fallen. Jim went in for supper. He would save the next adventure for tomorrow.
